DIY Seashell Decor

Two projects for under $4.00!

I bought the shells ($1 for a big bag) & jar ($1.95) at the Christmas Tree Shoppe. With some leftover hemp twine I crafted two different decor pieces. The string of shells was fun to make. I draped a broken costume necklace with yellow/seafoam green beads with it to compliment.

I’ve been redecorating/rearranging my room lately. My mom kind of took it over while I was away at school - although she did find a lot of great decor at garage sales and whatnot (her little obsession).

I draped some pretty string lights around my room and scored those two jewelry stands at TJ Maxx. Now my accessories aren’t tangled in a shoebox anymore…

DIY Wood Antiquing

In April I had my New Media senior show! My piece & thesis focused on nostalgia/retro culture through the lens of modern technology, and I wanted my gallery installation represent this clash as well.

I programmed a couple of different interactive apps for iPad and enclosed it in a “vintage” looking frame, but it wasn’t enough. One of the parts of my project featured home footage from VHS and other old media, so I decided to display the framed iPad on a wooden shelf to give it a homey feel.

However, the shelf looked too new. I didn’t have much time and followed some tutorials online to try to antiquate the look of the shelf. Here are pictures of my process :)

Materials used:

  • Two different grits of sandpaper
  • A hard wire brush, hammer, and other tools to create dents and wear
  • Wood stain & paintbrush
